Why this pick
Jarman similarly turns male desire into ritualized, painterly spectacle: sparse dialogue, posed bodies, and a deliberately anachronistic world make its erotic tension feel more like myth than realism.

Why this pick
Jarman similarly turns male desire into ritualized, painterly spectacle: sparse dialogue, posed bodies, and a deliberately anachronistic world make its erotic tension feel more like myth than realism.
Why this pick
Its entirely studio-built fantasy spaces, saturated color, and eroticized sailor imagery closely suit Querelle’s theatrical artificiality and dreamlike gaze.
Why this pick
For Querelle’s fusion of homoerotic imagery and artifice: Jarman frames desire, violence, and betrayal in tableaux modeled on painting rather than naturalistic period drama.
Why this pick
Its confrontational queer milieu, fractured form, and volatile erotic identity share Querelle’s sense of desire as both performance and danger, while pushing further into avant-garde experimentation.
Why this pick
Less decorative but equally uncompromising, this Fassbinder drama brings Querelle’s wounded, self-destructive longing into a rawer urban register with formal control and emotional severity.

01 / THE STORY
The plot centers on the handsome Belgian sailor Georges Querelle, who is also a thief and murderer. When his ship, ''Le Vengeur'', arrives in Brest, France, he visits the ''Feria'', a bar and brothel for sailors run by the Madame Lysiane, whose lover, Robert, is Querelle's brother. Querelle has a love/hate relationship with his brother, but when they meet at La Feria, they embrace, but also punch one another slowly and repeatedly in the belly. Lysiane's husband Nono tends bar and manages La Feria's underhanded affairs with the assistance of his friend, the corrupt police captain Mario.
