Why this pick
McQueen’s debut shares Shame’s severe visual control, bodily intensity, and refusal to soften alienated suffering; it is more political, but equally intimate and punishing.
Why this pick
A spare, quietly devastating portrait of a man moving through privileged social spaces while unable to reconnect with life, matching Shame’s emotional isolation and observational restraint.
Why this pick
Its drifting urban day and painfully tentative encounters echo Shame’s sense of someone trapped inside compulsion, self-disgust, and a longing for genuine closeness.
Why this pick
Like Shame, it puts a physically exposed, self-destructive man at the center and finds raw vulnerability in his failed attempts at intimacy and repair.
Why this pick
Andrea Arnold’s tactile realism and unflinching attention to damaged boundaries make this another intense character study where desire, shame, and vulnerability collide.
