SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION

If you loved Santa Sangre, try these.

The Holy Mountain poster 01

Movie / 1973 / Drama

The Holy Mountain

Why this pick

Jodorowsky's ritualistic pageant shares Santa Sangre’s blasphemous circus imagery, grotesque beauty and dream-logic, building a surreal spiritual journey through meticulously composed, shocking tableaux.

The Baby of Mâcon poster 02

Movie / 1993 / Drama

The Baby of Mâcon

Why this pick

This is similarly operatic, cruel and visually formal: a theatrical world of sacred iconography, bodily extremity and spectacle where beauty and revulsion are deliberately inseparable.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man poster 03

Movie / 1989 / Horror / Science Fiction

Tetsuo: The Iron Man

Why this pick

For Santa Sangre’s visceral psychological horror, this compact industrial nightmare offers another intensely personal descent into bodily transformation, obsession and frantic, hallucinatory imagery.

Singapore Sling poster 04

Movie / 1990 / Comedy / Drama / Horror

Singapore Sling

Why this pick

A monochrome fever dream of damaged people, ritualized violence and unstable identities, it matches the film’s transgressive emotional intensity and willingness to make trauma feel like surreal performance.

The Reflecting Skin poster 05

Movie / 1990 / Drama / Horror / Thriller

The Reflecting Skin

Why this pick

Its sun-bleached rural imagery disguises a child’s horrifying, myth-colored perception of family and violence. The same collision of innocence, grotesquerie and exquisite artifice makes it a strong companion.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The film starts with a naked figure sitting in a tree in what looks like a History of psychiatric institutions. Nurses come out to him, bringing a plate of conventional food and also one of a raw fish. As they try to coax him off of his perch, it is the fish that persuades him to come down. As the nurses get him to put on some overalls, the viewer sees that he has a tattoo of a phoenix on his chest.
