Why this pick
A restrained, intimate family drama about a young man pulled between loyalty, first love, and a criminally compromised household; it shares Lumet’s humane attention to the cost of inherited secrecy.
Why this pick
Its political pressure and generational family bonds echo the emotional stakes of Running on Empty, as private devotion and ideological choices leave lasting marks on children.
Why this pick
For the tender, quiet side of Running on Empty: a wounded adult and a child build a loving home, with gentle humor and an emphasis on everyday care rather than melodrama.
Why this pick
Though lighter in tone, it offers the same warm, observant feeling for a bright teenager navigating adult upheaval, romance, and an unconventional household without losing emotional honesty.

01 / THE STORY
Parents Annie and Arthur Pope are on the run as they were responsible for the anti-war protest bombing of a napalm laboratory in the 1970s. The incident accidentally blinded and paralyzed a janitor who wasn't supposed to be there. They've been on the run ever since, relying on an underground network of supporters who help them financially. At the time of the incident, their son Danny was two years old. As the film begins, he is in his late teens, and the family, now with younger son Harry, are again relocating and assuming new identities.
