Why this pick
A warm, New York-rooted romantic comedy with an independent heroine, vivid neighborhood texture, and a courtship that grows through sharp, lived-in conversation rather than grand gestures.
Why this pick
Its enduring appeal similarly comes from comic friction, emotionally guarded adults, and the gradual transformation of bickering companionship into a tender romance.
Why this pick
This has the same generous, character-first romantic spirit: a wary woman meets an unexpected man, while a bustling city and a memorable family world keep the comedy warm.
Why this pick
A bittersweet urban romance whose lonely working adults, witty dialogue, and compassionate shift from comic inconvenience to genuine feeling echo the charm of Elliot and Paula’s connection.
Why this pick
For the 1970s Manhattan atmosphere and struggling-actor milieu, this is an affectionate, funny ensemble portrait with the same sense of romantic and professional lives colliding.

01 / THE STORY
Dancer Paula McFadden and her ten-year-old daughter Lucy live in a Manhattan apartment with her married boyfriend, Tony DeForrest, until one day, he deserts her to go and act in a film in Italy. Before he left and unbeknownst to Paula, Tony subleased the apartment to Elliot Garfield, a neurotic but sweet aspiring actor from Chicago, who shows up in the middle of the night expecting to move in. Though Paula is demanding and also neurotic, and makes clear from the start that she doesn't like Elliot, he allows her and Lucy to stay.
