SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION

If you loved Phantom of the Paradise, try these.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show poster 01

Movie / 1975 / Comedy / Fantasy / Horror / Musical / Science Fiction

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Why this pick

A flamboyant, knowingly artificial rock-horror musical with outsized performances, gleeful transgression, and the same devotion to pop spectacle as De Palma’s feverish cult opera.

Shock Treatment poster 02

Movie / 1981 / Fantasy / Comedy / Horror / Science Fiction

Shock Treatment

Why this pick

Its television-studio nightmare, punchy songs, and aggressively stylized satire make it a close cousin to Phantom’s media-industry grotesquerie and restless camp energy.

The Apple poster 03

Movie / 1980 / Fantasy / Comedy / Science Fiction

The Apple

Why this pick

A deliriously excessive musical fable about fame, commerce, and corruption, delivered with the kind of gaudy production design and sincere-to-bizarre tonal swing Phantom embraces.

The Lair of the White Worm poster 04

Movie / 1988 / Comedy / Horror

The Lair of the White Worm

Why this pick

Ken Russell turns Gothic horror into a lurid pop-art hallucination—sensual, funny, and visually unrestrained—suited to Phantom’s baroque, mischievous sensibility.

Lisztomania poster 05

Movie / 1975 / Comedy / Fantasy

Lisztomania

Why this pick

This anarchic rock-opera biography shares Phantom’s maximalist visual wit, musical-showbiz satire, and willingness to turn familiar cultural myths into outrageous theatrical spectacle.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

In 1974, Composer/singer-songwriter Winslow Leach is heard by widely acclaimed record producer Swan as Winslow plays an original composition following a set run through by the 1950s-style nostalgia band ''The Juicy Fruits'', which Swan produces. Swan believes Winslow's music perfect to open "The Paradise"—Swan's highly anticipated new concert hall—and has his right-hand man Arnold Philbin steal it under the guise of producing Winslow.
