The Abominable Dr. Phibes poster 01

Movie / 1971 / Comedy / Horror

The Abominable Dr. Phibes

Why this pick

Vincent Price’s elegant, theatrical killer turns murder into grotesque performance art, matching the macabre humor, flamboyant disguises, and stylized cat-and-mouse pleasure of No Way to Treat a Lady.

Theatre of Blood poster 02

Movie / 1973 / Comedy / Horror

Theatre of Blood

Why this pick

A grandly theatrical avenger targets his victims through elaborate Shakespeare-inspired set pieces; it shares the original’s relish for performance, dark comedy, and a killer whose identity is inseparable from acting.

Kind Hearts and Coronets poster 03

Movie / 1949 / Comedy / Drama

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Why this pick

Its impeccably mannered serial murderer and bone-dry wit offer a more aristocratic counterpart to Christopher Gill: charming surfaces, multiple personas, and murder treated with deliciously dark comic precision.

Frenzy poster 04

Movie / 1972 / Crime / Thriller / Horror

Frenzy

Why this pick

Another mordantly funny urban thriller about a strangler, with a brisk investigative thread and an unsettling contrast between everyday civility and predatory violence.

The Honeymoon Killers poster 05

Movie / 1970 / Crime / Drama / Thriller

The Honeymoon Killers

Why this pick

This grim, deadpan portrait of a murderous pair trades theatrical disguises for damaged intimacy, but preserves the uncomfortable humor and unnervingly mundane texture around serial violence.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Christopher Gill (Rod Steiger) is a serial killer fixated on his late mother, a noted stage actress. Gill preys on older women. A Broadway theatre theatre owner and director, he adopts various disguises, e.g., priest, policeman, plumber, hairdresser, etc., to put his victims at ease (and avoid being identified) before strangling them and painting a pair of lips on their foreheads with garish red lipstick.
