Why this pick
Matches the champagne-dry screwball rhythm, class satire, and romantic sparring of My Man Godfrey, with a poised con artist and a sweetly flustered heir trading increasingly elaborate social games.
Why this pick
A fast, buoyant Depression-era fantasy about accidental wealth, full of the same affectionate contempt for high society and a heroine swept through absurd misunderstandings.
Why this pick
For Godfrey’s elegant nonsense, romantic complications, and satirical view of moneyed privilege: this is a glittering, breakneck screwball comedy with genuine warmth beneath the farce.
Why this pick
Its glamorous European setting, resourceful heroine, and social masquerade recreate the pleasure of watching clever people navigate a frivolous upper class with wit rather than cruelty.
Why this pick
A nimble mistaken-identity comedy that shares My Man Godfrey’s blend of sophisticated farce and sincere romantic charm, powered by a delightfully off-kilter heroine.

01 / THE STORY
During the Great Depression, Godfrey "Smith" Parke (William Powell) is living alongside other men down on their luck at a city dump on the East River near the 59th Street Bridge. One night, spoiled socialite Cornelia Bullock (Gail Patrick) offers him five dollars to be her "forgotten man" for a scavenger hunt. Annoyed, he advances on her, causing her to retreat and fall on a pile of ashes. She leaves in a fury, much to the glee of her younger sister, Irene (Carole Lombard). After talking with her, Godfrey finds her to be kind, if a bit scatter-brained. He offers to go with Irene to help her beat Cornelia.
