Why this pick
A richly mounted royal drama that shares Mrs Brown’s intimate interest in Victoria’s private life, balancing court ritual with a tender, character-led portrait of duty and devotion.
Why this pick
Another quietly affecting chapter of Queen Victoria’s later life, centred on an unconventional companionship that unsettles the palace hierarchy while giving Judi Dench a similarly formidable emotional role.
Why this pick
Its modern setting differs, but it has the same restrained, observant approach to monarchy: private grief and personal conviction collide with public expectation inside an emotionally guarded institution.
Why this pick
A poised, visually elegant court drama in which a royal marriage, loneliness and a forbidden emotional alliance are shaped by severe protocol and political scrutiny.
Why this pick
For the appeal of mature, finely acted period intimacy: this is a humane, witty drama about love, loyalty and the pressures surrounding a celebrated couple’s intensely private world.

01 / THE STORY
Several screens of text giving background are shown before a bust is shown flying over a palace wall and shattering into pieces. The film shows the story of a bereaved Queen Victoria and her relationship with a Scotland servant, John Brown (servant), a trusted servant of her deceased husband, and the subsequent uproar it provoked. Brown had served Victoria's Prince Consort, Albert, Prince Consort; Victoria's Household thought Brown might help the Queen who remained in mourning since the Prince Consort's death in 1861.
