If you loved Lonely Are the Brave, try these.

Junior Bonner poster 01

Movie / 1972 / Action / Drama / Western

Junior Bonner

Why this pick

Like Lonely Are the Brave, it treats a stubbornly independent man as an anachronism in a changing West, with warm affection, bruised family feeling, and an unhurried, elegiac rhythm.

The Misfits poster 02

Movie / 1961 / Drama / Romance / Western

The Misfits

Why this pick

Its drifting Nevada outsiders share Jack Burns’s refusal to fit comfortably into modern life. The film pairs open-country imagery with melancholy, compassion, and the sense that an older freedom is vanishing.

The Hired Hand poster 03

Movie / 1971 / Western

The Hired Hand

Why this pick

A spare, reflective revisionist Western about a wandering man trying to reconnect. Its intimate scale, lyrical landscapes, and quiet awareness of time passing closely suit Lonely Are the Brave’s mood.

Ride the High Country poster 04

Movie / 1962 / Action / Western

Ride the High Country

Why this pick

This is another humane, melancholy farewell to Western codes: two aging men confront a world that has moved beyond them, balancing rugged action with deep respect for their dignity.

The Ballad of Cable Hogue poster 05

Movie / 1970 / Comedy / Drama / Romance

The Ballad of Cable Hogue

Why this pick

Its comic surface gradually becomes a tender elegy for a frontier individual facing the arrival of modernity. It shares the earlier film’s affection for outsiders and disappearing ways of life.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

John W. "Jack" Burns (Kirk Douglas) works as a roaming ranch hand much as the cowboys of the old West did, refusing to join modern society. He rejects much of modern technology and carries no identification, such as a driver's license or Conscription. He cannot even provide authorities a home address because he just sleeps wherever he finds a place.
