Why this pick
Like Late Marriage, it finds dry comedy and piercing tenderness in social rituals, using restrained performances and long, awkward pauses to reveal people caught between duty and private longing.
Why this pick
A similarly intimate domestic drama where every choice is entangled with family expectation and social obligation; its naturalistic tension builds through moral friction rather than melodrama.
Why this pick
This shares the collision of parental expectations, cultural continuity, and a child’s concealed romantic life, but approaches the strain with agile, humane comedy and mounting social discomfort.
Why this pick
A sharp, affectionate match for its matchmaking premise: romantic independence repeatedly bumps against a close-knit family’s assumptions, with humor grounded in specific community detail rather than broad caricature.
Why this pick
Its observational realism and carefully escalating unease suit Late Marriage’s taste for social encounters that become emotionally charged, exposing how a group’s proprieties can constrict individual lives.

01 / THE STORY
Zaza (Lior Ashkenazi) is a 31-year-old Georgian-Israeli PhD student at Tel Aviv University whose family is trying to arrange a marriage for him within the Georgian community. The film's beginning sees Zaza and his parents Yasha and Lili visiting the home of a possible match, who is still in high school. Zaza is clearly unenthusiastic and it is mentioned that he has seen dozens of prospective brides before this.
