SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Its quiet, wintry small-town setting and three unlikely companions share Lars’s gentle pacing, dry humour, and deeply compassionate belief that connection can arrive without forcing people to change.
02
Why this pick
Like Lars and the Real Girl, it turns private grief and social withdrawal into an unexpectedly warm story of neighbours patiently making room for someone in pain.
03
Why this pick
Its premise is more whimsical, but it has Lars’s rare combination of eccentricity and total kindness: an isolated man is met with patience rather than ridicule.
04
Why this pick
This similarly understated dramedy uses awkward humour, family history, and emotional fragility to find warmth without smoothing over its characters’ loneliness.
05
Why this pick
For the discomforting side of Lars’s isolation, this is a much darker, more unsettling character study of longing and social disconnection, anchored by an unusually intimate performance.
