Why this pick
Like La Llorona, it turns a privileged household into an unsettling chamber of guilt, class power and feminine vengeance, with controlled pacing that lets dread seep into everyday domestic spaces.
Why this pick
A haunted home becomes the vessel for national violence, displacement and buried culpability. Its supernatural tension is tightly bound to human trauma rather than detached genre shocks.
Why this pick
This is a slow-burning supernatural investigation with an oppressive rural atmosphere and escalating uncertainty. It sustains the same feeling that unseen forces and social fears are closing in.
Why this pick
A ghost story shaped by historical atrocity, it gives its hauntings moral weight and mournful beauty. The past refuses to stay buried in a vulnerable, isolated institution.
Why this pick
Its elegant, melancholy haunted-house suspense prioritizes sorrow and memory over spectacle. The enclosed home and gradual revelations create a similarly intimate, tragic kind of fear.

01 / THE STORY
In the 1980s, Guatemalan dictator Enrique Monteverde orchestrated the brutal genocide of native Mayans. Decades later, after being tried and convicted, the guilty verdict is overturned because of a technicality, allowing him to return to his home. The decision is met with disgust and unrest by the public, who hold protests outside the Monteverde home. Despite this, the family lives in relative peace until Enrique's increasingly erratic and senile behavior forces most of his staff to quit. Shortly afterward, a young woman named Alma arrives as a new worker, and supernatural activity ensues.
