Why this pick
Like Kitchen Stories, it finds dry humor and deep tenderness in a solitary Scandinavian man's daily routines, letting an unlikely neighborly bond gently reshape his guarded world.
Why this pick
Its immaculate Nordic surfaces, deadpan absurdity, and quietly alienated protagonist echo Kitchen Stories' observational comedy, though with a more unsettling and surreal edge.
Why this pick
A warmly offbeat Norwegian character study about two socially uncertain men building a life through small routines, awkward encounters, and an unexpectedly moving friendship.
Why this pick
Roy Andersson's fixed-camera tableaux and bone-dry Scandinavian absurdism make everyday behavior feel both comic and melancholy, expanding the formal deadpan of Kitchen Stories.
Why this pick
Its patient attention to meals, domestic rituals, pauses, and unspoken tensions offers the same humane pleasure in watching ordinary lives reveal themselves gradually.

01 / THE STORY
Swedish efficiency researchers come to Norway to study Norwegian men, in an effort to help optimize their use of their kitchens. Folke Nilsson (Tomas Norström) is assigned to study the habits of Isak Bjørvik (Joachim Calmeyer). By the rules of the research institute, Folke has to sit on an Umpire chair in Isak's kitchen and observe him from there, but never talk to him. Isak volunteered for the program with the promise of a horse, but he only receives a dala horse, a little painted wooden statue.
