01
Why this pick
Gordon’s similarly manic, Lovecraft-inspired collision of reckless laboratory science, gooey practical effects, pitch-black humor, and escalating grotesquerie is the closest match to From Beyond’s wild energy.
02
Why this pick
Another Stuart Gordon Lovecraft adaptation, trading the Resonator’s dimensional terror for a damp, claustrophobic coastal nightmare with intense body horror and feverish momentum.
03
Why this pick
Its polished suburban surface gradually gives way to outrageous, tactile biological surrealism—the same pleasure in bizarre transformations and increasingly unrestrained practical-effects horror.
04
Why this pick
Like From Beyond, it treats technology as a device that ruptures ordinary perception, then pushes that premise into hallucinatory, sensual body horror rather than tidy explanation.
05
Why this pick
This Lovecraft-based descent into forbidden experiments and hidden monstrosity shares From Beyond’s lurid occult-science mood, practical creature work, and fascination with dangerous curiosity.

01 / THE STORY
Dr. Edward Pretorius is a scientist who has developed the Resonator, a machine which allows whoever is within range to see beyond normal perceptible reality. His assistant, Dr. Crawford Tillinghast, activates the machine and soon sees strange creatures in the air. When he is bitten by one of them, he urges Pretorius to turn off the machine. The crazed Pretorius refuses. Crawford panics and flees. When the police arrive, they find Pretorius decapitated. Crawford is subsequently arrested and accused of murder.
