Its Mexican Revolution setting, shifting outlaw-partner dynamic and cynical view of revolutionary heroism closely echo Leone’s blend of spectacle, satire and bruised idealism.
Why this pick
A grand, violent end-of-an-era western driven by doomed comradeship, moral compromise and operatic action—equally interested in the cost behind its explosive set pieces.
Why this pick
Its colonial-revolution politics and uneasy relationship between an insurgent and a calculating foreign operative carry the same bitter, human-scale disillusionment.
Why this pick
Another Zapata western where an unlikely pair are pulled through revolution, betrayal and large-scale action, with a lively surface masking a pointed political edge.
Why this pick
Leone’s equally patient visual storytelling, Morricone-shaped grandeur and wounded characters make it a natural match, though it trades revolutionary momentum for mythic frontier melancholy.

In Mexican Revolution-torn 1913 Mexico, Juan Miranda, a Mexican outlaw leading a bandit family, robs a coach of wealthy men and rapes a female passenger who insulted him. Passing by on a motorcycle is John (Seán) H. Mallory, an early Irish republicanism explosives expert, who is working in Mexico as a Silver mining rock blasting. Discovering his skill with dynamite and nitroglycerin, Juan relentlessly tries to force John to join him on a raid on the Mesa Verde National bank.
