Why this pick
Joe Swanberg brings the same conversational spontaneity and romantic restlessness to couples testing the limits of commitment over one eventful weekend.
Why this pick
Another Swanberg ensemble, with improvised-feeling dialogue, Chicago texture, and small emotional frictions between people who cannot quite articulate what they need.
Why this pick
It shares the close-up, naturalistic focus on chemistry and incompatibility, letting a relationship’s uncertainty emerge through lived-in moments rather than grand plot turns.
Why this pick
A warm, offbeat Seattle ensemble piece whose understated humour and casual interactions conceal complicated romantic and familial emotional currents.

01 / THE STORY
Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) are co-workers at Chicago craft brewery Revolution Brewing, where they spend their days drinking and goofing off. They seem to be perfect for each other, but they are both in relationships. Kate is with Chris (Ron Livingston), and Luke is with Jill (Anna Kendrick). Jill is a nice and practical girl, whereas Chris is more of an introvert. Jill presses Luke about marriage, which he promises he will be able to talk about some time soon.
