Why this pick
A private investigator follows a case into Lovecraftian occultism. It trades comedy for a more sinister mood, but preserves the noir-case structure and escalating supernatural unease.
Why this pick
Occult detective Harry D'Amour navigates Los Angeles magic, dangerous cult figures and grotesque threats—a stronger, darker cousin to Lovecraft's supernatural PI world.
Why this pick
The direct follow-up to Cast a Deadly Spell returns H. Philip Lovecraft to an alternate 1940s where magic is ordinary, sustaining its noir parody, period texture and fantastical social satire.
Why this pick
Its dusty neo-Western setting and deadpan comic tone turn a monster premise into an offbeat genre mash-up, much like Cast a Deadly Spell makes supernatural horror playfully noir.
Why this pick
A cynical paranormal con man, visible ghosts and a murder investigation create a brisk blend of spooky spectacle, gallows humor and increasingly high-stakes mystery.

01 / THE STORY
Ward stars as 1948 hardboiled private detective H. Philip Lovecraft, in a fictional universe where Magic (paranormal) is real, monsters and mythical beasts stalk the back alleys, zombies are used as cheap labor, and everyone—except Lovecraft—uses magic every day. Yet, cars, telephones and other modern technology also exist in this world. When he takes on a case, he finds himself embroiled in a plot involving magical hitmen, pure damsels, old flames and older evils all connected by a mysterious grimoire.
