The Saddest Music in the World
Why this pick
Maddin’s stylised artificiality, deadpan surreal humour, and melodramatic emotional repression make this a natural companion to Careful’s ornate, dreamlike absurdity.

02
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Why this pick
Distorted sets and expressionist performances turn psychology into architecture, offering the same sense of a sealed-off community ruled by irrational dread.
03
The Falls
Why this pick
This faux-documentary’s obsessive cataloguing, dry institutional voice, and bizarre invented logic suit Careful’s taste for formalism and absurdly serious world-building.
04
The Lair of the White Worm
Why this pick
Ken Russell pairs lurid artifice, eccentric ritual, and outrageous tonal shifts in a knowingly theatrical horror-comedy that shares Careful’s playful perversity.
05
The Cremator
Why this pick
Its precise framing, dark comic menace, and increasingly claustrophobic ritualisation of ordinary life create a more sinister counterpart to Careful’s repression and absurd decorum.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
Careful is set in Tolzbad, a fictional mountain town under constant threat of devastating avalanches that can be triggered by any loud noise or even a too-large expression of emotion. The people of Tolzbad suppress their emotions as much as possible, living in constant vigilance against losing self-control. An opening lecture cautions common advice ("Think twice!", "Don't stand so close to the walnut tree!").
