Evil Dead II
Why this pick
Its escalating cabin siege, manic slapstick rhythm and gleefully excessive practical gore make it a close companion to Braindead’s cartoonishly deranged horror-comedy energy.

Re-Animator
Why this pick
Like Braindead, it treats reanimation as a pretext for fast, tactile splatter, pitch-black jokes and increasingly unruly set pieces rather than solemn horror.
03
The Return of the Living Dead
Why this pick
A punkier, more sardonic zombie panic with inventive gore and characters who keep making matters worse, delivering the same infectious enjoyment of chaos.
04
Cemetery Man
Why this pick
Its cemetery undead mayhem combines extravagant practical effects with deadpan absurdity and a stylish, off-kilter sensibility that suits Braindead’s macabre playfulness.
05
Society
Why this pick
It starts as an uneasy suburban oddity before embracing astonishingly gooey body-horror spectacle, matching Braindead’s appetite for outrageous effects-led escalation.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
In 1957, explorer Stewart McAlden and his team smuggle a captured Sumatran rat-monkey, a Hybrid (mythology) creature that resulted from the rape of tree monkeys by plague-carrying rats, out of Skull Island. During the team's escape from the island's warrior natives, who demand the return of the creature, Stewart is bitten by the rat-monkey and is hacked to pieces by his crew, who fear the effects of the bite. The captured rat-monkey is then shipped to Wellington Zoo in New Zealand.
