Its harsh Nordic world, ritualistic violence and elemental landscapes echo Valhalla Rising, while sustaining the same mythic, hallucinatory gravity around a near-silent warrior.
Why this pick
Herzog’s feverish river odyssey shares Refn’s stripped-back pacing, hostile natural world and creeping spiritual derangement, with a band of men moving inexorably toward oblivion.
Why this pick
A brutal frontier journey told with sparse dialogue, moral desolation and weathered imagery; its violence feels ritualistic and its landscape as punishing as Valhalla Rising’s.
Why this pick
This dreamlike black-and-white western follows an increasingly spectral passage through violence and wilderness, matching Valhalla Rising’s meditative tempo and death-haunted mythology.
Why this pick
Less violent but comparably austere, Haneke’s severe rural nightmare uses icy compositions, minimal exposition and an atmosphere of ancient, inescapable cruelty.

01 / THE STORY
Somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, a mysterious mute thrall with one eye is held captive by a Norwegian people chieftain from Sutherland and forced to fight to the death against others. During his imprisonment, the man is brought his meals by a young thrall boy, who seems to sympathise with him. After dreaming of finding an arrowhead in pool, the vision comes true when he is bathed. Using the arrow, the man manages to break free, killing the chieftain and his entourage and impaling the chieftain's head on a nithing pole. As he sets out across the land on foot, the man soon realizes that the boy is following him.
