Why this pick
A caustic, emotionally precise study of ego and estrangement, driven by uncomfortable humor and a willingness to let flawed people remain difficult rather than neatly redeemable.
Why this pick
It shares Maren Ade’s clear-eyed blend of comedy and melancholy, observing professional ambition, romantic uncertainty, and self-performance with warmth but no sentimentality.
Why this pick
Its deadpan tableaux and bizarre intrusions make social life hilariously uncanny; it matches Toni Erdmann’s taste for sustained awkwardness and sadness beneath comic absurdity.
Why this pick
Less prank-driven but similarly humane and unsparing, it finds humor, loneliness, and hard-won independence in an adult life observed with unusual patience.
