SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Demy’s equally stylized romantic world turns everyday longing into vibrant, fully sung emotion, with meticulous color design and a bittersweet sense of chance shaping its love story.
02
Why this pick
Its buoyant musical passages, female friendship, and decades-spanning romantic optimism echo Rochefort’s warmth, while Varda brings a looser, more intimate New Wave playfulness.
03
Why this pick
Varda returns to Rochefort with residents and performers reflecting on Demy’s film, making this a tender, celebratory companion for viewers drawn to its town, color, and communal spirit.
04
Why this pick
This gently observed first-love story shares Demy’s belief in romantic possibility and youthful yearning, though its sunlit suburban realism offers a quieter counterpoint to Rochefort’s choreography.
05
Why this pick
For Rochefort’s lovers-in-motion and color-saturated romantic fantasy, Carax offers a far wilder Parisian variation: ecstatic visual invention, music, and love pursued against all odds.
