Why this pick
A rigorously restrained character study of a man managing dangerous impulses, with the same unnerving closeness, moral discomfort, and wintry emotional isolation.
Why this pick
Its raw, subjective realism and patient attention to a stigmatized man trying to reconnect with ordinary life echo The Woodsman’s tense, compassionate discomfort.
Why this pick
Another unflinching, intimate drama about abuse and its aftermath, told with spare dialogue, oppressive atmosphere, and a refusal to offer easy emotional release.
Why this pick
A quietly devastating portrait of someone attempting to re-enter daily life while carrying profound damage; it shares the original’s observational pace and fragile human encounters.
Why this pick
Its bruised performances and tentative connection between deeply damaged people match The Woodsman’s interest in shame, anger, loneliness, and the uncertain possibility of grace.

01 / THE STORY
Walter, a convicted Child molestation, returns home to Philadelphia after serving 12 years in prison. His friends and family have abandoned him, with the exception of his brother-in-law, Carlos. Walter's apartment is just across the street from an elementary school—an obvious source of temptation. He gets a job at a local lumber mill and meets Vicki, one of the few women working there. After sleeping with Vicki, Walter tells her that he molested little girls, but rationalizes his crimes by saying, "I didn't hurt them." Vicki is clearly shocked and disturbed by this new information, but before she can consider how to respond to it, Walter tells her to leave his apartment.
