Why this pick
A polished Victorian-era suspense chamber piece, pairing a vulnerable heroine with an elegant, controlling villain and steadily tightening dread behind respectable drawing-room surfaces.
Why this pick
Its shadowy postwar melodrama shares the original's gothic unease, psychological pressure, and gradual uncovering of a woman's troubled past.
Why this pick
For the same old-dark-house atmosphere: a threatened young woman, watchful servants, expressive black-and-white shadows, and suspense built through mounting suspicion.
Why this pick
A restrained period thriller in which domestic respectability conceals menace; its measured pace and morally murky Victorian world fit the stately tension of The Woman in White.
Why this pick
A compact noir-gothic thriller about a woman drawn into a false identity, with a sinister household and escalating entrapment rather than action-led suspense.

01 / THE STORY
Walking late one night, Walter Hartright (Gig Young) sees a mysterious woman in white who promptly vanishes. A man in a carriage explains that a woman recently escaped from a nearby asylum. As the carriage drives by, Walter glimpses another man hidden inside. It is Count Alesandro Fosco (Sydney Greenstreet). Walter reaches his destination, which is Limmeridge House owned by the Fairlies, where he has been hired to teach drawing. There he meets the occupants: Marian Halcombe (Alexis Smith), cousin to Miss Laura Fairlie (Eleanor Parker); an elderly nurse Mrs. Vesey (Emma Dunn), and an invalid uncle, Frederick (John Abbott (actor, born 1905)). He also meets a guest who has just arrived, Count Fosco. He is immediately suspicious of Fosco.
