Why this pick
Like Tod Browning’s circus nightmare, this silent melodrama turns a physically marked performer into the center of a darkly romantic, expressionistic world of exploitation and longing.
Why this pick
Its grotesque, isolated protagonist and feverish romantic fixation share the tragic intensity and stylized silent-era horror sensibility of The Unknown.
Why this pick
This German Expressionist horror centers bodily dread and a man terrified by what his altered body might make him capable of, matching The Unknown’s macabre psychological fixation.
Why this pick
Browning returns to carnival life with an unusually intimate, unsettling view of its community, balancing tenderness, spectacle, and menace in a way that strongly echoes The Unknown.
Why this pick
Its painted shadows, unstable psychology, and tale of manipulation offer the same claustrophobic silent-horror mood, with visual stylization doing as much work as plot.

01 / THE STORY
Alonzo the Armless is a circus freak who uses his feet to knife throwing and fire a rifle at his partner, Nanon. However, he is an impostor and fugitive. He has arms, but keeps them tightly bound to his torso, a secret known only to his friend Cojo, a midget. Alonzo's left hand has a polydactyly, which would identify him as the perpetrator of various crimes.
