Winter Light

Why this pick

Its severe, pared-back encounters and close attention to crisis of faith echo Bresson’s austere moral pressure, replacing Joan’s courtroom interrogation with an equally unforgiving spiritual silence.

Diary of a Country Priest poster 02

Movie / 1951 / Drama

Diary of a Country Priest

Why this pick

Bresson’s earlier work shares the same restrained performances, devotional concentration, and refusal of melodrama, following faith as an inward ordeal rather than a spectacle.

Day of Wrath poster 03

Movie / 1943 / Drama

Day of Wrath

Why this pick

Dreyer brings comparable rigor to religious authority and persecution, using stark compositions and measured pacing to make accusation and judgment feel crushingly immediate.

Au Hasard Balthazar poster 04

Movie / 1966 / Drama

Au Hasard Balthazar

Why this pick

The same radically economical Bresson method turns suffering into quiet moral observation, with spare imagery and an unforced sense of grace amid cruelty.

Mouchette poster 05

Movie / 1967 / Drama

Mouchette

Why this pick

For the film’s unadorned emotional force and rigorously controlled style, this offers another Bresson portrait of endurance, isolation, and dignity under relentless pressure.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

In 1431 Jeanne, a French peasant girl, is imprisoned for heresy and brought to trial at Rouen. Despite rigorous interrogation by the judges and constant persecution from the jailers, her faith remains unshaken. The relentless theological questioning and argument in court is broken only by an ineffectual attempt at torture and an examination to prove her virginity. Jeanne's insistence that her military ventures were bidden by God is scoffed at by the English, who are anxious to destroy the legend already building around her.7fb
