Why this pick
Like The Summit of the Gods, it treats mountaineering as a near-mythic test of obsession and endurance, with stark high-altitude imagery and escalating, deeply personal survival stakes.
Why this pick
Its immersive expedition detail, hostile white-out atmosphere, and respect for the psychological pull of the world's highest mountain echo the grounded tension of The Summit of the Gods.
Why this pick
A tense, meticulously staged ascent driven by ambition and public scrutiny; its severe mountain spectacle and steadily mounting peril should suit the same appetite for obsession under extreme conditions.
Why this pick
It exchanges peaks for a sushi counter, but shares the central fascination with a solitary master whose uncompromising pursuit of perfection both defines and isolates him.
Why this pick
For the contemplative animated side of The Summit of the Gods, this wordless, beautifully composed survival fable offers elemental nature, solitude, and profound emotional understatement.

01 / THE STORY
In Kathmandu, the Japanese reporter Fukamachi believes he recognizes Habu Jôji, this mountaineer who has been missing for years. He seems to hold in his hands a camera that could change the history of mountaineering. Were George Mallory and his companion Andrew Irvine the first men to scale Everest on June 8th, 1924? Only the little Kodak camera they took with them might reveal the truth. In Kathmandu 70 years later, a young Japanese reporter named Fukamachi recognizes the camera in the hands of the mysterious Habu Jôji, an outcast climber believed missing for years. Fukamachi enters a world of obsessive mountaineers hungry for impossible conquests on a journey that leads him, step by step, towards the summit of the gods.
