Why this pick
Like The Stepford Wives, it turns a polite social gathering into a tightening study of conformity, exclusion, and a protagonist whose unease is dismissed by everyone around them.
Why this pick
Its bright, welcoming community gradually feels unnervingly coordinated, matching Stepford’s slow-burn paranoia and the dread of an outsider confronting an impenetrable social order.
Why this pick
Peele updates Stepford’s suburban satire into sharply controlled social horror: genial manners, escalating isolation, and an alert outsider recognizing that normality is a performance.
Why this pick
Though more comic and humane, it shares Stepford’s immaculate artificiality, its suspicion of prescribed domestic happiness, and the pleasure of watching someone question a world built to manage them.
Why this pick
Haynes gives suburban alienation a cool, unsettling psychological texture, echoing Joanna’s growing estrangement from polished domestic expectations and institutions that refuse to hear her.

01 / THE STORY
Joanna Eberhart (Katharine Ross) is a young wife who moves with her husband Walter (Peter Masterson) and two children from New York City to the idyllic Fairfield County, Connecticut Connecticut suburb of Stepford. Loneliness quickly sets in as Joanna, a mildly rebellious aspiring photographer, finds the women in town all look great and are obsessed with housework, but have few intellectual interests. The men all belong to the exclusionary local Men's Association, which Walter joins, to Joanna's dismay. Neighbor Carol Van Sant's sexually submissive behavior to her husband Ted, and her odd, repetitive behavior after a car accident also strike Joanna as strange.
