Why this pick
A more unsettling companion, centered on an immigrant woman whose private hopes and family obligations collide; it shares Keshavarz’s intimate attention to identity, motherhood, and life between cultures.
Why this pick
Its poised, romantic sensibility and cross-cultural perspective echo Leila’s feeling of being emotionally suspended between worlds, with a similarly compassionate focus on a woman defining herself.
Why this pick
A restrained, deeply personal story of diaspora, intimacy, and the selves formed by different places. It matches The Persian Version’s interest in identity without reducing cultural conflict to a simple choice.
Why this pick
Keshavarz’s earlier feature carries the same candid, female-centered energy and Iranian cultural specificity, exploring friendship, desire, and the risks of claiming a life beyond prescribed roles.
Why this pick
Its multigenerational family portrait shares the tender push-pull of The Persian Version: a child of immigrants gradually seeing parental sacrifice, romance, and cultural inheritance in a new light.

01 / THE STORY
Coming from two countries at odds with each other, Iranian-American Leila strives to find balance and embrace her opposing cultures, while boldly challenging the labels society is so quick to project upon her. When her family reunites in New York City for her father’s heart transplant, Leila navigates her relationships at arm’s length in an effort to keep her “real” life separate from her family life. However, when her secret is unceremoniously revealed, so are the distinct parallels between her life and that of her mother Shireen.
