Why this pick
Bakshi’s frantic, grimy adult animation shares Fritz’s countercultural vulgarity, restless fantasy-reality movement, and unvarnished urban cynicism, but gives its aimless antihero a more sustained, feverish journey.
Why this pick
Its abrasive mix of street-level satire, sexual provocation, caricature and shifting animated forms matches the confrontational adult-cartoon sensibility behind Fritz, with an even more politically charged edge.
Why this pick
For the appeal of episodic, drug-hazed escape and gleefully offensive surrealism, Jodorowsky offers a live-action psychedelic odyssey packed with grotesque images and anti-establishment satire.
Why this pick
This is adult animation of a very different temperament—cool, dreamlike and unsettling—but its strange designs, social allegory and disorienting imagination suit an appetite for 1970s boundary-pushing cartoons.
Why this pick
Its wildly stylized, hallucinatory animation and mythic excess provide the same sensation of animation freed from family-film expectations, trading Fritz’s sleaze and satire for elemental visual delirium.

01 / THE STORY
It is the 1970s; Fritz the Cat is now married, on welfare, and has a child named Ralphie, who casually masturbates. As his wife screams at him for being an irresponsible father and husband, Fritz sits on the couch, staring off into space, smoking a marijuana joint. Tired of listening to his wife nag at him, he fades off into his own little world, imagining what life would be like for him if things were different.
