Why this pick
Visconti's decadent Nazi-era family drama shares Cavani's lushly oppressive visual world, moral corruption, and uneasy fusion of political catastrophe with private sexual power.
Why this pick
Its exquisitely stylised fascist Italy, fractured memories, and protagonist shaped by desire and shame make it a close match for The Night Porter's seductive moral unease.
Why this pick
A refined, fading bourgeois world is quietly overtaken by fascism; its melancholy beauty and emotional restraint offer a less confrontational counterpart to Cavani's historical darkness.
Why this pick
Antonioni similarly turns European alienation into cool, sensual unease, following identity as something unstable and dangerous through controlled compositions and a hypnotically unhurried pace.
Why this pick
For its uncompromising examination of fascism, eroticised domination, and the corruption of bodies by power, though Pasolini's approach is far colder and more confrontational.
