McCabe & Mrs. Miller poster 01

Movie / 1971 / Western

McCabe & Mrs. Miller

Why this pick

Like The Missouri Breaks, this is a wintry, off-kilter Western where commerce, violence, and fragile alliances erode frontier mythmaking; its loose rhythms and melancholy visual texture make it a particularly close companion.

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid poster 02

Movie / 1973 / Western / Drama

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid

Why this pick

A bruised, elegiac revisionist Western with shifting loyalties and hired violence. Its sense that old friendships and outlaw codes are being quietly extinguished matches Arthur Penn’s skeptical frontier mood.

The Long Riders poster 03

Movie / 1980 / Western

The Long Riders

Why this pick

Walter Hill gives outlaw life a tactile, unsentimental weight, balancing family bonds, robbery, and inevitable betrayal. Its muddy realism and restrained fatalism fit the morally unstable world of The Missouri Breaks.

The Hired Hand poster 04

Movie / 1971 / Western

The Hired Hand

Why this pick

This meditative, visually lyrical Western shares the film’s interest in drifters trying to build a life amid violence. It is quieter and more interior, but similarly unsettles conventional Western heroism.

Rancho Deluxe poster 05

Movie / 1975 / Action / Comedy / Western

Rancho Deluxe

Why this pick

For the same shaggy, anti-authoritarian flavor of rustlers tangling with powerful landowners, this modern cattle-country satire offers eccentric characters, dry humor, and a deliberately unglamorous view of rebellion.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Tom Logan is a Cattle raiding experiencing hard times. He and his gang are particularly upset by the hanging of a friend of theirs by Braxton, a land baron who takes the law into his own hands. They decide to seek vengeance against Braxton by killing his foreman Pete Marker and by buying a small property close to Braxton's ranch, then rustling his stock.
