Why this pick
Another glossy, star-filled Agatha Christie mystery from the same director, pairing a luxurious period setting with tart rivalries, theatrical suspects, and an elegantly paced investigation.
Why this pick
Its lavish country-house gathering, famous ensemble, and playful treatment of detective conventions echo the pleasure of watching larger-than-life guests trade barbs around a murder mystery.
Why this pick
A sunlit celebrity retreat becomes a sharp, game-like whodunit, with show-business resentments and carefully planted clues creating a more sophisticated companion to the film-world intrigue.
Why this pick
For the cosy old-house mystery side, this broad comic whodunit offers eccentric household characters, suspicious deaths, period décor, and deliberately heightened sleuthing.
Why this pick
Its manor-house murder is driven as much by cutting social observation and a superb ensemble as by clues, delivering the same pleasure in concealed grudges beneath polished English manners.

01 / THE STORY
In 1953 in the English village of St. Mary Mead, home of Miss Jane Marple, a big Hollywood production company arrives to film a costume drama about Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England with two famous movie stars, Marina Rudd and Lola Brewster. The two actresses are old rivals. Marina is making a much heralded comeback after a prolonged "illness" and retirement (due to what was really a nervous breakdown when her son was born with severe brain damage). She and her husband, Jason Rudd, who is directing the film, arrive with their entourage. When she learns that Lola will be in the film as well, she becomes enraged and vents her anger. Lola then arrives with her husband, Marty Fenn, who is producing the film.
