My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown

Why this pick

Like The Miracle Worker, this is an unsentimental, intensely performed portrait of a teacher-family dynamic helping a fiercely resistant young person claim language, agency and artistic self-expression.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly poster 02

Movie / 2007 / Drama

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Why this pick

Its tactile, subjective filmmaking brings an isolated consciousness vividly outward, echoing The Miracle Worker’s concern with communication, dignity and the hard-won bridge between inner and shared worlds.

The Elephant Man poster 03

Movie / 1980 / Drama

The Elephant Man

Why this pick

This restrained Victorian drama shares Arthur Penn’s film’s compassionate focus on a person denied ordinary social recognition and on the patient human connection that restores selfhood.

The Wild Child poster 04

Movie / 1970 / Drama

The Wild Child

Why this pick

A spare, observant account of an educator attempting to reach a child cut off from conventional language and society; its patient lessons and ethical ambiguity strongly complement The Miracle Worker.

Children of a Lesser God poster 05

Movie / 1986 / Drama

Children of a Lesser God

Why this pick

It similarly treats deafness and communication as lived experience rather than mere obstacle, while probing the friction between forceful teaching methods and respect for an independent voice.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The true story of the frightening, lonely world of silence and darkness of 7-year-old Helen Keller who, since infancy, has never seen the sky, heard her mother's voice or expressed her innermost feelings. Then Annie Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from Boston, arrives. Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie reaches out to Helen through the power of touch, the only tool they have in common, and leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light.
