Monos poster 01

Movie / 2019 / Drama

Monos

Why this pick

Its isolated young fighters, unstable command structure and mountain-jungle setting create the same physically immediate sense of war as disorientation, where survival steadily erodes trust.

Beasts of No Nation poster 02

Movie / 2015 / Drama

Beasts of No Nation

Why this pick

A visceral, unsparing civil-war drama that shares the original’s focus on exhausted soldiers, precarious loyalties and the human cost of moving through hostile territory.

War Witch poster 03

Movie / 2012 / Drama

War Witch

Why this pick

This intimate Central African conflict story similarly keeps violence close to its characters’ inner lives, balancing survival urgency with a mournful, morally unsettled atmosphere.

Embrace of the Serpent poster 04

Movie / 2015 / Adventure / Drama

Embrace of the Serpent

Why this pick

Though not a combat film, its hypnotic black-and-white jungle journey shares a hostile, enveloping landscape and a tense encounter between outsiders, memory and colonial violence.

Come and See poster 05

Movie / 1985 / Drama / War

Come and See

Why this pick

Its intensely subjective filmmaking makes war feel bewildering and bodily immediate, following one vulnerable person through an increasingly nightmarish landscape without offering easy heroism.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

War-weary Sergeant Xavier (Marc Zinga) and fresh recruit Private Faustin (Bak) are accidentally separated from their Rwandan battalion inside Congolese territory when it is called out suddenly on nighttime raid. They face a lack of water, food, and threats from malaria and jungle wildlife. The two seek to reunite with the battalion by heading westward but must remain wary of interacting with the local population given Congolese antipathy to the Rwandan Army and the presence of irregular rebel factions.
