Why this pick
Mackendrick brings the same dry, affectionate comic precision to a small community outsmarting official obstacles, with lively ensembles and a gently anarchic Scottish spirit.
Why this pick
Its endangered rural railway inspires the same unhurried, eccentric battle between stubborn locals and polished authority, carried by warm ensemble comedy rather than broad farce.
Why this pick
Another nimble Ealing satire, pairing an idealistic disruptor with institutions determined to contain him; it shares The Maggie’s crisp social observation and mischievous escalation.
Why this pick
A ramshackle old cinema and its idiosyncratic staff create a similarly shabby-charming world, where practical setbacks become warm, character-led comic adventures.
Why this pick
Though set among celebrity and continental travel, it has the same polished Ealing irony: a seemingly practical arrangement gets steadily more absurd through personality clashes and social pretence.

01 / THE STORY
The ''Maggie'' is a typical Clyde puffer, a small, aged cargo boat with a varied, irascible and argumentative crew. MacTaggart (Alex Mackenzie), her rascal of a captain, is in dire need of £300 to renew his licence. In a shipping office in Glasgow, he overhears Mr Pusey (Hubert Gregg), an Englishman complete with bowler hat and umbrella, trying to arrange for the transportation of some personal furniture for his boss, American Calvin B. Marshall (Paul Douglas (actor)). The big, reputable shipping company has nothing immediately available, so MacTaggart gets the job when Pusey mistakenly believes that he works for the company and that the more modern vessel docked next to the ''Maggie'' is MacTaggart's.
