Why this pick
A witty, tightly plotted wartime railway thriller with identity games, eccentric fellow travellers, and the same buoyant blend of danger, romance, and British comic poise.
Why this pick
Its innocent traveller caught in an international conspiracy, brisk chase structure, and dry humour make it a direct precursor to the suspenseful, playful spirit of The Lady Vanishes.
Why this pick
This marries glamorous European settings, shifting loyalties, romantic sparring, and elegant comic suspense in a way that preserves Hitchcock’s light-footed menace.
Why this pick
A polished, colourful conspiracy caper driven by a civilian drawn into espionage, with flirtatious comedy and elaborate suspense rather than grim spy realism.
Why this pick
Its confined holiday setting, colourful ensemble, mischievous clues, and sophisticated social comedy offer a more sunlit but similarly entertaining puzzle-box mystery.

01 / THE STORY
English tourist Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood) arrives at the "Gasthof Petrus" inn in the country of Bandrika, "one of Europe's few undiscovered corners". Iris is returning to Britain to marry a "blue-blooded cheque chaser", but an avalanche has blocked the railway line. The stranded passengers are forced to stay the night at the inn, including Charters and Caldicott, cricket enthusiasts who want to return to England to see the last days of the Test cricket.
