Why this pick
Ti West builds the same patient, retro-styled dread: an ordinary job becomes an increasingly isolating overnight ordeal, with long quiet stretches that make every small disturbance matter.
Why this pick
Its contained workplace setting, gradually uncovered supernatural history, and understated escalation echo The Innkeepers’ pleasure in letting curiosity turn into sustained unease.
Why this pick
A hushed old-house ghost story driven by atmosphere, period detail, and the uncertainty of what is inhabiting the rooms; it favors creeping tension over constant shocks.
Why this pick
This melancholy haunted-house investigation shares the appeal of a decaying grand building, lonely corridors, and a protagonist slowly tracing a spirit’s tragic past.
Why this pick
For the wistful, quietly lonely side of The Innkeepers, this is a spare and patient ghost film that treats empty rooms and passing time as sources of eerie emotional weight.

01 / THE STORY
Claire (Sara Paxton) and Luke (Pat Healy (actor)) are two young employees at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, a once-grand hotel that is about to close. Claire and Luke are the only employees working during its final weekend of operation. Claire, who suffers from severe asthma, has recently dropped out of college, and Luke runs a website chronicling the hotel's supposed hauntings. Both are ghost hunting enthusiasts and are fascinated by the hotel's supposedly haunted history, which includes the legend of Madeline O'Malley, a bride who hanged herself in the 1800s when her fiancé 'jilted her at the altar' and whose body was supposedly hidden in the basement by the hotel owners.
