Why this pick
Like The Householder, this is an intimate, gently observed account of a young man growing into marriage, finding tenderness and responsibility through everyday domestic uncertainty.
Why this pick
Its unhurried realism and close attention to marriage, class, and small domestic humiliations echo Ivory’s compassionate view of Indian social conventions.
Why this pick
A finely textured Calcutta domestic drama, it shares The Householder’s warmth, wit, and perceptive focus on how a marriage changes under family and economic pressure.
Why this pick
For the same delicate visual restraint and emotional nuance: a marriage is explored through glances, routines, intellectual loneliness, and feelings left carefully unspoken.
Why this pick
More elegiac and class-conscious, but its patient observation of a household in transition and its refined visual control suit the quiet humanism of The Householder.
