Why this pick
Like von Trier’s film, this is an uncomfortably intimate immersion in a killer’s warped perspective, using rigorous visual control and cold, escalating tension rather than conventional crime-thriller distance.
Why this pick
A grim, grotesquely observational portrait of a serial murderer, matched to The House That Jack Built through its deliberately abrasive tone, bleak humour, and refusal to make its central figure glamorous.
Why this pick
A stark, unsensational serial-killer study that shares von Trier’s interest in moral vacancy, viewer discomfort, and the banal textures surrounding extreme violence.
Why this pick
This elegant, macabre descent into self-justifying madness echoes Jack’s cultivated monologues and artistic rationalisations, while combining horror with grotesque satire and precise, stylised imagery.
Why this pick
For the same prolonged sense of contamination and psychological cruelty: it observes violence through an oppressive, methodical realism, centring coercive charisma rather than cathartic thriller mechanics.
