Like The Horse's Mouth, this is a nimble Alec Guinness vehicle built around an improbably determined British misfit, with crisp comic escalation and affectionate satire rather than broad farce.

Why this pick
Like The Horse's Mouth, this is a nimble Alec Guinness vehicle built around an improbably determined British misfit, with crisp comic escalation and affectionate satire rather than broad farce.
Why this pick
Its elegant, wickedly dry British humour and Guinness's virtuoso transformations make a fine companion to Gulley Jimson's gleefully anti-respectable artistry.
Why this pick
An eccentric, idealistic inventor crashes into a world of entrenched interests in this sharply observed Ealing comedy, sharing the original's comic hostility toward practical, respectable society.
Why this pick
Tony Hancock's accidental modern-art sensation offers a similarly caustic comic look at artistic ambition, imposture, patrons, and a hero magnificently ill-suited to conventional life.
Why this pick
For the more anarchic edge of The Horse's Mouth: a flamboyant, unruly outsider destabilises polite British institutions in a dark, highly theatrical satire.

01 / THE STORY
Eccentric painter Gulley Jimson (Alec Guinness) is released from a one-month jail sentence for telephone harassment of his sponsor, Mr Hickson (Ernest Thesiger). Nosey Barbon (Mike Morgan (actor)), who wants to be Jimson's protégé, greets Jimson at Wormwood_Scrubs_(HM_Prison), but Jimson tries to discourage Nosey from pursuing painting for a living. Jimson steals Nosey's bike to make his way back to his houseboat, which his older lady friend Coker (Kay Walsh) has been maintaining in Jimson's absence.
