Why this pick
Like The Handsome Suit, it wraps a sincere outsider’s wish to become someone else in broad, colourful Japanese fantasy-comedy, while keeping the emotional focus on self-acceptance rather than glamour.
Why this pick
A playful high-concept romance with abrupt comic energy and a tender emotional core, it similarly uses an impossible premise to examine longing, idealized love, and what genuinely makes a connection meaningful.
Why this pick
Its warm, accessible blend of broad humour and heartfelt feeling shares the generous, unpretentious emotional spirit of The Handsome Suit, with everyday kindness carrying more weight than appearances.
Why this pick
It pairs heightened comedy with an empathetic look at people judged by how they appear or behave. Its tone is sharper and more adult, but it shares the original’s compassion for imperfect outsiders.
Why this pick
This buoyant romantic comedy treats physical insecurity and social expectations with the same colourful exaggeration and basic warmth, rooting its laughs in a character’s desire to be loved without becoming someone else.

01 / THE STORY
An overweight restaurant owner Takuro (Muga Tsukaji) while popular with people for his delicious dinners, is unlucky in love because of his looks, dress sense and terrible habits. Takuro longs for his part time staff person Hiroko who rejects him because of his looks. In turn, he still runs the restaurant, which is now being looked after by new staff member Motoe, who is similarly overweight and much resembles the handsome suit Takuro. He discovers a high tech suit that gives him the looks and body of a model. His relationships with people and love change, but he realises that people's motivations aren't as simple as they could be. The suit itself, in the meantime, has its own mind on what it wants to do.
