02
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Why this pick
A pressured gambler moves through a grimy, intimate underworld in Cassavetes’s character-first style—less plot mechanics than the painful self-destruction of a charismatic man.
03
Rounders
Why this pick
Its poker scenes carry the same seductive logic of risk and relapse, while the central friendship gives the gambling spiral a more accessible, propulsive shape.
04
Owning Mahowny
Why this pick
This is a colder, more restrained study of addiction: an outwardly ordinary man’s gambling compulsion becomes frightening through routine, secrecy, and accumulating consequences.
05
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
Why this pick
For the same unglamorous 1970s urban texture and morally exhausted character study, this finds tension in small compromises rather than heroic crime-movie posturing.
