The Seven-Ups poster 01

Movie / 1973 / Action / Thriller / Drama / Crime

The Seven-Ups

Why this pick

A hard-edged New York police thriller driven by surveillance, street-level detail and an obsessive detective; its unvarnished texture and famous vehicular pursuit closely suit Friedkin's urban intensity.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle poster 02

Movie / 1973 / Crime / Drama

The Friends of Eddie Coyle

Why this pick

It shares the lived-in criminal world, procedural authenticity and unsentimental fatalism, but shifts attention toward low-level crooks and informants trapped by the machinery around them.

Fear Over the City poster 03

Movie / 1975 / Action / Crime / Drama / Thriller

Fear Over the City

Why this pick

Jean-Paul Belmondo anchors this muscular Paris police thriller, whose relentless pursuit, bruising physicality and documentary-like city energy make it a natural transatlantic companion.

To Live and Die in L.A. poster 04

Movie / 1985 / Crime / Thriller

To Live and Die in L.A.

Why this pick

Friedkin revisits the reckless-cop template with a more stylized 1980s Los Angeles look, retaining the escalating manhunt, abrasive moral atmosphere and nerve-racking kinetic action.

The Offence poster 05

Movie / 1973 / Crime / Drama

The Offence

Why this pick

For the same raw, disillusioned policing mood, this offers an intense psychological chamber piece: a detective's pursuit of a suspect becomes a punishing examination of rage and institutional corrosion.
