The Apartment

Why this pick

Wilder’s similarly sharp blend of romantic melancholy and corporate cynicism finds an essentially decent man compromised by a system that treats people as assets.

Kiss Me, Stupid poster 02

Movie / 1964 / Comedy

Kiss Me, Stupid

Why this pick

Another Wilder farce built on greed, sexual bargaining, and escalating deception, with the same unapologetically prickly view of human self-interest.

One, Two, Three poster 03

Movie / 1961 / Comedy / Family

One, Two, Three

Why this pick

Its breakneck dialogue, opportunistic characters, and ruthless comic dismantling of institutions make it an especially lively companion to Wilder’s insurance-scam satire.

The Front Page poster 04

Movie / 1974 / Comedy / Drama

The Front Page

Why this pick

Wilder applies his caustic comic timing to a press-room pack of schemers, preserving the pleasure of cynical banter and morally flexible alliances.

Sweet Smell of Success poster 05

Movie / 1957 / Drama

Sweet Smell of Success

Why this pick

For the acid dialogue and transactional relationships: it is darker than The Fortune Cookie, but equally alert to how charm and leverage become weapons.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

CBS cameraman Harry Hinkle is injured when football player Luther "Boom Boom" Jackson of the Cleveland Browns runs into him during a home game at Municipal Stadium (Cleveland). Harry's injuries are minor, but his conniving lawyer brother-in-law William H. "Whiplash Willie" Gingrich convinces him to pretend that his leg and hand have been partially paralyzed, so they can receive a huge indemnity from the insurance company. Harry reluctantly goes along with the scheme because he is still in love with his ex-wife, Sandy, and being injured might bring her back.
