Bykov’s tightly wound moral thriller shares The Fool’s furious view of institutional rot, following one ordinary man’s catastrophic compromise with escalating pressure and stark realism.
Why this pick
A bleak, meticulously observed confrontation between an individual and entrenched local power, with the same sense that bureaucracy turns private crisis into something inescapable.
Why this pick
Its raw urban textures and unsparing ethical gaze create a similarly claustrophobic experience of people caught in systems that offer neither justice nor mercy.
Why this pick
A grimly absorbing real-time bureaucratic odyssey: procedural detail, institutional indifference, and darkly human observation build dread without relying on conventional thriller mechanics.
Why this pick
Like The Fool, it makes ordinary work and administrative encounters quietly devastating, anchoring its social critique in one decent man’s mounting ethical strain.

01 / THE STORY
A Russian plumber, Dima Nikitin, is also a municipal repair-crew chief and studying building engineering in an unnamed Russian town that is not yet 40 years old. Some of the city’s housing blocks are already in a grave state of disrepair. A burst bathroom pipe in one of the rickety communal housing buildings reveals a much larger problem, as the exterior wall behind the pipe has cracked and started to shift. When Nikitin goes outside to inspect the matter, he realizes the building has fissured from the ground up to the ninth and last floor.
