Why this pick
A stark death-penalty drama with an intimate, bruised focus on damaged people caught in institutional violence, moral isolation, and the possibility of difficult human connection.
Why this pick
Its compassionate but clear-eyed approach to a condemned man and those affected by his crime echoes the emotional gravity and anti-sensational realism of The Executioner’s Song.
Why this pick
A cool, lyrical American true-crime odyssey whose detached observation of violence and troubled young people creates a similarly unsettling gap between brutality and everyday life.
Why this pick
This fact-based crime drama patiently traces the prolonged human consequences of a violent act, favoring emotional aftermath and institutional pressure over thriller-style excitement.

01 / THE STORY
The movie is about the final nine months of the life of Gary Gilmore (criminal), beginning with his release from prison at the age of 35 after serving 12 years for robbery in Indiana. He is allowed to fly to Utah to live with Brenda Nicol, a distant cousin who was close to him and agrees to sponsor him. She tries to help him get back to normal life, which he finds extremely difficult after being in prison for so long. He soon moves to live with his uncle Vern, with whom he works in shoe repair, and Vern's wife. Gilmore next moves on to another job, at an insulation factory, where he performs well at first, but starts to have erratic hours and contentious relationships with co-workers.
