Why this pick
Matches The Evil Dead’s gleefully excessive practical gore, punky low-budget energy, and escalating siege-of-the-night momentum, while pushing the horror further into anarchic dark comedy.
Why this pick
A ferocious, effects-driven possession outbreak with the same tactile slime, frantic camera energy, and relentless sense that a contained place has become hopelessly overrun.
Why this pick
Its isolated-party setting, demonic contagion, crude practical transformations, and knowingly wild tone make it a close companion to Raimi’s cabin-nightmare intensity.
Why this pick
A scrappy cult creature feature built around handmade effects, claustrophobic house-bound panic, and an infectious enthusiasm for gross-out horror over polish.
Why this pick
For the same early-’80s practical-effects assault and supernatural dread, this offers a more dreamlike descent into gore, doom, and unstoppable otherworldly forces.

01 / THE STORY
Five Michigan State University students—Ash Williams, his girlfriend, Linda; Ash's sister, Cheryl; their friend Scott; and his girlfriend Shelly—are vacationing at an isolated cabin in rural Tennessee. On their first night there, Cheryl hears a faint, demonic voice telling her to "join us" just before her hand becomes possessed and draws a picture of a book with a deformed face on its cover. Shaken and confused, she decides not to mention the incident to the others.
