Why this pick
Like The Door in the Floor, it observes a privileged, intellectually performative family breaking apart, filtering adult selfishness and grief through children who cannot escape the emotional fallout.
Why this pick
Its cool, wintry visual restraint and precise ensemble drama echo the uneasy domestic atmosphere of The Door in the Floor, where desire, parenting, and private damage quietly destabilize a family.
Why this pick
This is another finely calibrated suburban drama about adultery, frustrated parenthood, and social surfaces concealing pain, with the same discomforting mix of emotional intimacy and detachment.
Why this pick
For the devastating study of parents altered by a child's loss, it shares The Door in the Floor's patience, emotional severity, and attention to the ways grief corrodes a marriage.
Why this pick
Its sprawling, emotionally exact New York world similarly treats grief as something that spreads into sex, family conflict, and moral confusion rather than resolving into a tidy catharsis.

01 / THE STORY
The film is set in an exclusive beach community on Long Island, where children's book author and artist Ted Cole (Jeff Bridges) lives with his wife Marion (Kim Basinger) and their young daughter Ruth (Elle Fanning), who usually is supervised by her nanny Alice. Their home is filled with photographs of the couple's teenaged sons, who were killed in an automobile accident; the tragedy left Marion deeply depressed and her marriage in a shambles. The one shared experience that holds the family together is a ritualistic daily viewing of a home gallery of family photographs of the deceased sons.
